PROJECT PLAN: EXPLORE YOUR AWESOME BRAIN
TomTod’s Explore Your Awesome Brain Project will help students understand brain development and empower deeper learning, greater self-awareness, and the development of a growth mindset.
How does the brain work in early adolescence?
What does neuroscience recommend for healthy adolescent brain development?
What things have neuroscience research found hurts adolescent brain development?
TomTod Project Plan of the Week – Explore Your Awesome Brain – teaches students about the neuroscience of their own brains. In this short video, How to Teach Brain Science to Kids, Eric H. Chudler, Ph.D., Executive Director at the Center for Neurotechnology at the University of Washington, breaks down the importance of teaching neuroscience to kids.
PROJECT PLAN & RESOURCES
Empower students to know their own brains (and why they do the middle-school-things they do) with TomTod’s Explore Your Awesome Brain Project Plan and Interactive Student slide deck.
Explore Your Awesome Brain
If you think of middle school brains as super-powered race-cars with bad breaks, then the Explore Your Awesome Brain project is a crash course in brain driver’s ed for your students. This lesson is based on Ohio’s social and emotional learning standards and compliments reading, writing, and science standards.
TomTod’s Explore Your Awesome Brain Project will help students understand brain development and empower deeper learning, greater self-awareness, and the development of a growth mindset. The goal of this project is for students to learn neuroscience research about how their brains work and how they can apply these scientific findings to make their brains more awesome!
Topics covered in the Explore Your Brain project are:
- Growth mindset and neuroplasticity
- Adolescents’ need for sleep and the effects of sleep deprivation
- Grey matter and synaptic pruning/sprouting
- Social-Emotional Learning and amygdala hyperactivity
- Metacognition and goal setting
- Effects of chemical dependency and addiction on the brain
We hope this project empowers your students to know their own brains, discover the power of metacognition and mindfulness, and utilize neuroscience to help them learn!
