CAMP WHAT IF @ HOME -DAY 4
Your emotions are superpowers.
Today, we explore empathy and how it can transform us into mind-readers and healers!
Empathy isa superpower, but it’s not JUST a power for superheroes, it’s something we can all do. Empathy allows you to understand what someone is going through even if you’ve never actually been through it. Amazing, right!?
Your mission today is build-up your empathy so you can build with empathy!

BIG QUESTION OF THE DAY
What is empathy? How is empathy a superpower?
CAMP WHAT IF PLEDGE
I will be curious because curiosity open windows. I will ask questions!
I will be a co-hero because I am a part of a team. Together, we will be co-learners, co-explorers, and co-creators. I promise not to follow the counselors lead! I will follow my imagination!
I will give respect. I will respect people, technology, myself and our ideas!
I will engage my “What if…” powers. This week, I will SQUINT. I will not SQUELCH!
Let’s play Secret Identity Discover!
Today, you will meet a community hero – someone who is using their superpowers to make their community better.
You mission is to discover who this person is and why they are a community hero in less than 5 minutes by asking only YES / NO questions!
Then we will interview this community hero about their heroic ideas and work!
Good luck discovering this hero’s secret identity!
Would you rather…be able to read minds or have to say everything you think out loud?
Share your origin story. Share a high, a low, a funny funky story, or an unbelievable unpopular opinion!
Creative empathy – Can you have empathy for a pencil or a shoe or grass? How would these objects feel and when have you felt the same?
To unlock the power of empathy, you 1st must understand the difference between empathy vs sympathy.
Your mission is to put empathy and imagination into action by making a creative solution for your character. Remember helping someone starts with understanding how they feel – that’s empathy, that’s your superpower.
Share with your team how you feel empathy for your character, then share and add to your ideas as a team, select 1 idea for your project and use your prototyping paper and use Google Drawing to create your team’s idea.
EMPATHY IN ACTION
As you prepare to create real ideas that put empathy and imagination into action, get inspired by what other middle schoolers have done with their superpowers!
EXPLORE WITH EMPATHY
Explore Akron through the eyes of other middle schoolers and see if you empathize and relate with them and their city.
Hero challenges are your chance to test your super-powers by completing these hands-on, creative super challenges and sharing your results with us. The more challenges you complete, the more points you earn, and the more prizes you and your camp can win! You can complete and share your Hero Challenges either by using your phone or by using your computer!

Hero Challenge #1 – Create an Air-Powered Vehicle
Wonder Woman has an invisible jet, Captain America has a motorcycle, but what does your hero drive? How about…an amazing air-powered vehicle!
Design your transport using the items in today’s Adventure Pack and see how far it can get, using only the air from a balloon (or your lungs, whichever works best for you). Record your trial runs and show us your best design!
Need some inspiration?
Hero Challenge #2 – Draw yourself as tree
Get creative and draw yourself, but if you were a tree! On each root, write down your virtues, strengths, skills, and good habits.
On the leaves write down things you’d like to improve, skills you want to learn, or habits you want to adopt. This allows you to see all of your secret powers and the areas that you’d like to improve upon.
